Square, 8 in, and pressed from a fallen areca palm leaf. The contour and the grain are the leaf's own, not a print of one.

Nothing is added — no bleach, no dye, no coating. The leaves are gathered after they fall from the tree, cleaned and heat-pressed, which is why the colour runs from pale straw to deep brown across a stack and no two plates match exactly. They are rigid enough for a hot course and they are backyard compostable, so they go on the heap rather than into a special collection.

They are also safe to burn, which makes them genuinely useful for camping and barbecues where carrying rubbish home is the part nobody enjoys.
