Minoware Yunomi Japanese Tea Cups
Yunomi tea cups made in Minoware — the pottery of the Mino region of Japan, a tradition dating back more than 1,300 years and certified as a traditional craftwork by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in 1978.
A yunomi has no handle, and that is a design decision rather than an omission. The cup is held in both hands around the body, which tells you the tea's temperature before you drink it — a Japanese tea served too hot is a fault, and the cup is the instrument that tells you so.
It is also taller than it is wide, which concentrates the aroma toward the rim rather than letting it disperse the way an open bowl does. That shape is specific to everyday tea rather than to ceremony.
Minoware is a working craft rather than a decorative one — made for daily use, which is why these are robust enough to use every day rather than kept for guests.
