Floral Paper Tea Party Set, 48 pc

Twenty-four flower-shaped plates and twenty-four paper cups with handles — a complete tea-party setting for twelve or a generous one for eight. The cups have handles, which is the detail that makes this read as a tea party rather than a picnic.

A shaped plate does something a round one cannot: it signals the theme before anything is served. For a children's tea party or a floral shower, the plate is the decoration, so the table needs very little else.

Paper throughout, so it ends in the bin. Keep it away from an open flame, and expect the printed colour to vary a little between batches and screens — that is normal for printed paper tableware.

Count by places, not by pieces: twenty-four of each is twelve guests with a plate and a cup each and one spare set, or eight guests with room to come back for more cake.

• Flower-shaped plates: the theme reads before food arrives
• Cups with handles: what makes it a tea party, not a picnic
• 24 of each: twelve places, or eight with seconds
• Paper: straight into the bin
• Children's parties and showers: the occasions it suits
• Keep from flame: printed paper
