Bone china is the thinnest and whitest of the porcelains and translucent enough to hold against a light. That translucency is what makes a deep blue read as rich rather than heavy, and what lets a gold rim look like part of the piece rather than applied to it.
It is also, against intuition, harder and more chip resistant than ordinary porcelain at the same thinness. The bone ash in the body is what gives it that strength, which is why bone china can be made as fine as it is.
A gold rim is a surface decoration and the one thing here that needs care: hand wash it. A dishwasher cycle will dull the gold long before anything happens to the china underneath.
