The charger is the plate nobody eats from. It sits under the dinner plate for the length of the meal and makes the setting look finished.

At 13 in it is wider than any plate that will be set on it, so a band of antique gold shows all the way round whatever is on top. The rim is embossed rather than printed, which means the pattern holds a shadow and reads from across the table rather than only from above. The finish is antique rather than bright — closer to old brass than to foil, and far more forgiving under warm light.

It also does the practical job it was invented for: it catches what misses the plate and keeps the tablecloth out of the wash.
