Gold-Trimmed Bone China Tea Set
A tea cup set in bone china with gold trim, made from over 45% bone content with refined porcelain clay.
Forty-five per cent is the figure that matters and the reason to read it. Bone content is what makes bone china translucent, light and — counter-intuitively — harder than ordinary porcelain; above about 40% it becomes genuinely fine, and below 30% the term means very little.
At that level the body is thin enough to hold against a light and see through, which is the test. It is also why a gold trim reads as part of the piece here rather than as a band applied to a thick white edge.
This is a set for using rather than displaying, but it needs hand washing. Gold is a surface decoration; a dishwasher will dull it long before the china shows any wear.
- Over 45% bone content: above 40% is where bone china becomes fine
- Translucent: hold it against a light and see through it
- Harder than porcelain: what the bone content buys
- Gold trim: reads as part of the piece, not applied
- For using: not a cabinet set
- Hand wash: gold dulls in a dishwasher
