Black Walnut Serving and Bread Board
A solid black walnut board for bread, cheese and serving. Walnut is dense and closed-grained, so it resists the knife scarring that opens up a softer timber and starts holding moisture.
The dark grain is the reason to choose walnut over a pale hardwood: it hides the marks of use rather than displaying them, so a board that is actually used still looks presentable on a table. Each board carries its own grain pattern, so no two are identical.
Oil it occasionally with a food-safe mineral oil rather than washing it like a plate, and never put it in a dishwasher — heat and prolonged water are what split a solid board along the grain. Give it a dedicated side for raw meat if you use it for prep as well as serving, or keep it to serving only — walnut is handsome enough that most people end up doing the latter.
