Celadon Tea Set, Azure or Pink
A ceramic tea set finished in a celadon glaze, available in azure or pink.
Celadon is a glaze rather than a colour, which is the distinction worth understanding. The colour comes from iron in the glaze reacting during firing, so it varies in depth across each piece and pools darker where the glaze runs thick — a painted finish is uniform and flat by comparison.
It is also one of the oldest continuous traditions in East Asian ceramics, and the reason it has lasted is that the pale translucent surface shows the colour of the tea in the cup. A dark or opaque glaze hides it.
Azure is the traditional celadon register; pink is a modern departure from it. Both work for daily use as readily as for an occasion, which is how a tea set earns its shelf.
- Celadon is the glaze: the colour comes from firing, not paint
- Varies across each piece: pools darker where the glaze runs thick
- Shows the tea's colour: why the pale surface has lasted centuries
- Azure or pink: the traditional register, or a modern one
- Daily use or occasion: not reserved for either
- Hand wash: to protect the glaze
