Zellige

What is zellige?

Zellige is the Moroccan tradition of hand-cut glazed tilework, where small geometric pieces are set into repeating patterns and the glaze is deliberately uneven so the surface catches light. These plates borrow that language — relief lattice and radiating mandala geometry — rather than reproducing the tiles themselves.

Does a relief-lattice plate hold food well?

Yes. The relief is around the rim and the centre is left smooth and flat, so a plate serves normally and the pattern frames the food. Sauce does not collect in the lattice, and the glaze is sealed, so nothing lodges in the pattern.

What do these sit with?

Plain white and warm metals. The geometry is strong enough to carry a table on its own, so glassware, cutlery and linens are better kept simple. Terracotta, deep green and unbleached linen are the natural companions if you want a second colour.
