Notturno

Notturno is the decorative lighting series — solar glass jar lights, solar cherry firework strings, plastic garden and hanging lantern strings, icicle strings and soft cotton glow lights. Both solar and battery sets are included, so the series covers a garden and an indoor room. Prices run $14.99 to $79.99.

Will solar string lights work through the winter?

They work, but for less time each night. A solar panel charges on daylight rather than warmth, so short winter days mean a shorter run after dark — often two to four hours instead of eight. Snow or leaves on the panel stop it charging altogether, so it needs wiping clear. For reliable winter lighting, a battery set is the better choice.

What is the difference between icicle and lantern string lights?

Icicle strings hang in short vertical drops of varying length, so they are made to run along an eave, a railing or the top of a fence and read as a falling line. Lantern strings space individual shaded bulbs along a single cable, which suits a canopy, a pergola or a line strung across a patio where you want distinct points of light rather than a curtain.

Can these lights be left outside in the rain?

The solar and garden lantern sets are made for outdoor use and handle rain. What they are not made for is standing water, so the battery box or solar base should sit raised and not in a puddle or a flowerbed that floods. The cotton glow lights are an indoor set and should be kept dry.
