Snowflake Burlap Christmas Table Runner, 13 x 60 in

A table runner 13 x 60 in, made from spun polyester in a burlap weave, patterned with snowflakes.

Spun polyester burlap is the useful compromise. Real jute burlap sheds, scratches a polished table and cannot be washed often; a polyester version keeps the open rustic texture but is soft, foldable, washable and does not fray at a cut edge.

It is also doing a job beyond decoration. A runner down the centre of a table takes the hot dishes, the spills and the scratches that would otherwise land on the table itself — which is why a runner earns its place at a meal rather than only before one.

Sixty inches suits a table of six, a coffee table, a desk or a console. It folds flat for storage, so it comes out each December rather than being replaced.

• Spun polyester burlap: burlap texture, none of the shedding
• Protects the table: hot pans, scratches and spills land here
• 13 x 60 in: a table of six, or a console
• Soft and foldable: stores flat, comes out each year
• No fraying: unlike real jute
• Washable: which real burlap is not
