A short stem is a deliberate choice, not a shortened one. It drops the centre of gravity, so a full glass is far harder to knock over than a tall-stemmed martini — which is the one real flaw of the classic shape.
The bowl stays triangular, so the drink still reads as a martini and still presents the surface area that lets aromatics reach you. What changes is handling: at 11 cm tall the glass can be picked up around the bowl or the stem, and it fits under a cabinet shelf where a full-height martini glass will not.
