Nordic Kiln Blue Ceramic Plates
Kiln-turned blue is not a painted colour. It happens in the firing, so the depth varies across the surface and between pieces — a set of four will not be four identical blues, which is the point of buying it.
There are four shapes rather than four sizes of the same thing. Two flat plates at 8 and 9.5 in for a starter and a main; an 8 in deep dish for anything with sauce; and a 7.5 in hat bowl, which is the wide-brimmed shape that holds a small amount of food in the middle and gives it a frame. Choosing across the shapes rather than within one size is how you end up with a table that works for a whole meal.
They are porcelain, so they are harder and thinner than earthenware at the same weight, and they take the dishwasher without the glaze dulling.
