Aria Crystal Bordeaux Wine Glass, 850 ml
Eight hundred and fifty millilitres sounds absurd until you understand what the volume is for. A Bordeaux pour is around 150 ml; the rest of the glass is air, and air is what a tannic red needs to open.
The bowl is tall and tapers inward, so wine swirled against the sides exposes a large surface to that air and the aromatics then funnel up to a narrower rim rather than dispersing. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why the same bottle tastes different from this glass than from a tumbler.
Lead-free crystal, with an ultra-thin stem drawn fine enough to hold between two fingers. Thin stems break more easily than thick ones — worth knowing, and the reason to hand wash.
- 850 ml: the volume is air, not a bigger pour
- Tall tapered bowl: large surface, then a narrow rim
- Opens a tannic red: the reason Bordeaux glasses exist
- Lead-free crystal: clarity without lead
- Ultra-thin stem: held between two fingers
- Hand wash: a fine stem is the part that breaks
