Hand-Painted Underglaze Porcelain Plates
Porcelain plates carrying a hand-painted design applied as an underglaze.
Underglaze is the distinction that matters, and it is invisible until a plate has been used for a year. The pattern is painted onto the body and then sealed under a clear glaze, so a knife runs over glass rather than over the decoration — which is why an underglaze plate still looks new after a thousand meals and an overglaze one does not.
Hand-painted means the line varies. On a set of these, no two plates are identical and the brushwork is visible if you look for it, which is the difference between a plate that was made and one that was printed.
Porcelain is fired hotter than stoneware and is correspondingly harder, thinner and less porous — so it takes the hand-painting cleanly and resists chipping where plates stack.
- Underglaze: sealed under clear glaze, so it cannot wear off
- A knife runs on glass: not on the decoration
- Hand-painted: the line varies, no two identical
- Porcelain: harder, thinner and less porous than stoneware
- Still new after a year: the practical test underglaze passes
- Dishwasher safe: the glaze protects the pattern
